Citrus is a Japanese yuri manga series written and illustrated by Saburouta and published by Ichijinsha. The manga has even been translated in English. It also has a 12 episode anime television series adaptation.
Citrus has 10 volumes filled with romance, passion, and friendship. The Citrus manga follows the story of a young, fashionable, spontaneous and a fun loving girl, Yuzu Aihara.
After the death of her father, her mother re-marries another man. This leads Yuzu to transfer to a boarding school – the prestigious Aihara Girls’ Academy in Citrus.
The outspoken and daring Yuzu struggles to fit into the conservative all-girls academy; mainly because most of her time was spent preoccupied with boys and shopping rather than studying. Upon transferring, Yuzu quickly befriends Harumi Taniguchi (Citrus Manga), a like-minded troublemaker with whom she broke many school rules.
Yuzu often finds herself clashing with the president of the student council, Mei Aihara, who also happens to be her step sister. Yuzu’s dislike for her step sister grows into hatred when she is forced to share a room with her step sister.
Mei’s cold attitude and her inappropriate sexual advances towards her often left Yuzu feeling uncomfortable around her. The series mainly revolve around the evolution of the relationship between the two sisters.
Yuzu even helps her step-sister reconcile with her step-father and went out of her way to support Mei. As they both start to learn more about each other in the Citrus Manga, they start to develop unconventional feelings towards each other.
The feelings leave Yuzu confused and bewildered, especially when she realises that her feelings are developing a romantic side. Citrus originally ran for 6 years and officially ended in 2018.
The plot of the manga series is interesting and well written. The edgy storyline keeps the reader hooked till the very end.
