Spice and Wolf or Ōkami to Kōshinryō is a Japanese manga series based on the Japanese light novel series of the same name. The manga was written by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Keito Koume.
This Spice and Wolf manga series has unfortunately run its course with 16 published volumes; it lasted 10 years, from September 2007- December 2017. The reason that these series sold millions of copies was that of its unique storyline.
Although Spice and Wolf is a fantasy story, it does not consist of the usual fictional elements of magic and swords but rather focuses on economics and trade.
The main protagonist of the story is a 25-year-old traveling merchant, Kraft Lawrence. Lawrence in Spice and Wolf had been learning the art of trade since he was 12 and when he turned 18, he ventured out on his own.
His goal was to collect enough money to, one day, start his own shop. Lawrence in Spice and Wolf manga had already been traveling for seven years, gaining money and experience, so he was coming pretty close to achieving his goal.
However, his life took an interesting turn when one night he finds a wolf-deity named Holo in his wagon. Although she herself was 600 years old, Holo takes the form of a 15-year-old girl except with wolf ears and tail in Spice and Wolf.
Holo tells Lawrence that she is the town’s goddess of harvest and has been blessing them with excellent crops. But then she expresses to him how hurt she was that the town had forsaken her in Spice and Wolf manga.
The town’s people had not kept their end of the bargain with her and instead only criticised her. Holo asks Lawrence to take her with him so she can go back to her homeland, Yoitsu, all the while traveling to see how the world had changed around her.
Lawrence agrees and considers this a “quid pro quo” situation as Holo’s wisdom grants him immense profits. But their adventure is not without its hurdles in Spice and Wolf.
